Describe an average day in the life of Katie. I’ve always been an early riser, so I start most days with a good workout. Most of the time, that’s yoga! Whether I go to class, or do my own home practice, I like to start my days with a sweat :) Then it’s off to my day job as a software sales consultant. After ‘Corporate Katie’ wraps up, you'll find me teaching yoga or spin, exploring different studios/gyms, at NIDA acting classes, catching up with friends, or just watching Netflix with the hubby and a bottle of red :) I have a number of passion projects budding at the moment, so there is never a dull moment!
What inspired you to start practising and teaching yoga? In 2015, my partner and I decided to move from San Francisco to Sydney, so I took a month off and headed to India for my 200 hr yoga teacher training. Prior to this, I dabbled with yoga, but after I became officially obsessed! Yoga has changed my life for the better and being able to share that with others makes me so grateful I teach!
What was the most memorable thing about India? India was so intense - everything from the food, culture, people, traditions, it was unlike any other place I've ever been. I'd say that the most memorable thing about india is how I felt when I got back to Australia. I had more gratitude than ever before for the smallest things in life - warm showers, clean drinking water, and if I'm honest....meat and alcohol (which are banned from Rishikesh!!!. My time in India heightened my appreciation for just about everything in life!
Your favourite thing about yoga is... Ah, this is a tough one!!! If I have to choose just one thing, I love that it never gets easy. Regardless of how much progress you make, there is always something to work toward. This also helps me practice changing frustration into motivation.
Any tips on how to juggle fitness and exercise on top of a busy work/life schedule?
Here are my top 3 tips:
- You have to make your health and fitness a priority, because it is way too easy to find an excuse or reason to NOT work out and stay on track.
- Be creative and flexible: When you're super busy, it's hard to find time to work out, so it helps to be creative and flexible - sneak in a lunchtime workout twice per week, throw on your favourite playlist and do 10 minutes of basic workouts (squats, lunges, burpees, etc) in your bedroom before you go to bed, try new studios/classes that you can head to from work, change up drinks with a friend for a walk around the park - every little bit helps!
- Set achievable goals - whether it's to get in shape for an wedding or birthday, get your bikini body ready for summer, or train for an event, having something to work toward will keep you from pushing snooze a million times when your alarm goes off each morning!
Your biggest source of motivation is... The people around me! There’s nothing more motivating for me than watching others push themselves, try new things, and make progress toward their goals.
Your secret to happiness is... Realising that I’m in control of my own happiness! Each day can and should be a great one, but it’s up to me to make that happen, regardless of what life throws my way
